ABOUT DR. JEFFREY SHAW

Professor Jeffrey S. Shaw has taught as an Adjunct Professor at Stern
since 1979. He has taught introductory statistics courses to both undergraduate
and graduate students as well as introductory calculus, calculus II, operations
research, and the Ph.D. core level course of theoretical probability and
statistics. Professor Shaw has also taught at Fordham University, Baruch
College, and City College of New York.
Since 1992, Professor Shaw has continued his adjunct teaching at NYU
while establishing a successful full-time Private Practice as a Clinical
Psychologist and Life Coach in Midtown Manhattan near Grand Central Station.
His clinical approach is both cognitive/behavioral as well as modern psychoanalytic.
His techniques and insight allow him to hone in on problems very quickly
helping people to make progress very quickly, often in a few and sometimes
even in one session. He helps people with a variety of life problems such
as work issues including relationships on the job, other relationship
issues, health matters, and issues relating to anxiety and depression.
Professor Shaw received his B.A. in Mathematics from Queens College in
1968 with his major of mathematics. He graduated magna cum laude and as
a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was a Systems Computer Programmer at Raytheon
Company from 1971 to 1972 and then studied at NYU’s Courant Institute
of Mathematical Sciences from 1971 to 1972.
Professor Shaw then changed his career path toward working more directly
with persons in human services in the mid 1970’s. He was an Interviewer
for the Social Security Administration and a Social Worker at Catholic
Charities from 1973 to 1975. From 1975 to 1977, he completed his Masters
Degree in Psychology from the New School for Social Research, and from
1978 to 1985, he completed his Ph.D. in Psychology from City University
of New York.
During the period of his graduate work, Professor Shaw privately tutored
approximately 200 students in statistics, calculus, and other mathematics
subjects, and he began his over 25 year period of teaching these and other
subjects as an Adjunct Professor.
From 1984 to approximately 1990, Professor Shaw served as a Statistical
Consultant to several organizations including Merrill Lynch, Metropolitan
Life, Chemical Bank, Super Glue Corporation, the FDIC, Manpower, Forbes,
the Hospital for Joint Diseases, the Board of Education, and the New York
City Police Academy. Also, from 1987 to 1992, he was a full-time Assistant
Vice President at Citibank carrying out quantitative marketing research
for Citibank’s Investment and Insurance Departments.
Professor Shaw attributes much of his success in both clinical and teaching
settings not only to his hard work, but also to a true caring for the
